How to Maintain Ceramic Crafts

Leave a message

1. Daily maintenance of ceramic crafts is actually quite simple. Generally, they can be cleaned directly with dish soap. For stronger cleaning, use soap with a little ammonia, or a mixture of equal parts linseed oil and turpentine; these can help restore the ceramic's shine. If you accidentally spill strong tea or ink, wipe it thoroughly immediately to prevent stubborn stains.

2. For valuable ceramic crafts, it is recommended to wax them approximately every two to three months to protect their quality. If you find minor scratches on the ceramic surface, apply toothpaste to the scratches and then carefully wipe them with a soft cloth. This can easily remove the scratches and restore the ceramic's appeal.

3. Preventing ceramic crafts from impacts and drops is an important part of maintenance. When handling expensive ceramics, it is recommended to wear thin cotton gloves or gauze-like fleece gloves to prevent corrosion from sweat and salt, and to avoid damage caused by slipping.

4. For overglaze ceramics, avoid direct sunlight and oil fumes, and minimize touching and wiping, especially with rough materials, as these can damage the glaze and overglaze decoration. In contrast, underglaze ceramics are easier to maintain; mainly avoid scratching with hard or rough objects. Whether underglaze, overglaze, or in-glaze, general maintenance involves gently wiping with a clean, damp, soft cotton cloth. Overglaze ceramics should not be wiped frequently.

5. For sculpted ceramics, usually just use a soft brush to remove dust, or gently brush the crevices with a soft brush. For low-temperature glazed ceramics, avoid wiping with a cloth or brush to prevent the glaze from peeling off.

6. When cleaning, general stains can be removed with a cotton swab dipped in diluted ammonia or soap/laundry detergent, followed by rinsing with clean water. When washing thin-walled ceramics, control the water temperature to avoid excessive temperature differences that could cause the porcelain to crack. If colored ceramics show lead leaching, you can first wipe them with white vinegar, and then rinse them with clean water.
